Kahnawake to host Six Nations Sing - April 07, 2012

Kahnawake will be hosting traditional singing groups next month for the Six Nations Sing. The Sing will be held on Saturday, April 7 and will begin at 12 p.m. at the Longhouse on Route 207. The last time Kahnawake hosted the Six Nations Sing was in 2007.


For those who never went to a Sing before shouldn’t expect to find food and souvenir vendors around because it’s not a powwow, some people tend to make that understandable mistake. The Six Nations Sing started in the 1950’s or 1960’s and is held twice a year – once around Easter weekend and once around American Thanksgiving. The Sing also served as a mutual aid society to help raise money for those less fortunate, such as victims of house fires, or those suffering from other hardships from around the Confederacy.

At high Noon the Sing begins with five verses of the Confederacy sing, a Women’s Dance and there will also be a meal served. During the meal, delegates determine where the next sing will be held, with a social to follow. Attendance could reach up 500 with the 10 -12 singing groups in attendance, so space may be limited.

Here Lara explores the private places of the home, examining the intimacy of domestic relationships with themes such as obsession, instability, isolation and violence. Performed by Lara with the astonishing Lael Stellick, this work is an articulation of sensuality, vulnerability and explosive rage.

Une première pour les artistes et écrivains autochtones de Montréal

Six projets appuyés par le CALQ

Le Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec est heureux d'annoncer le résultat de la première inscription au Fonds Montréal pour les artistes et écrivains professionnels autochtones. Six projets, issus de pratiques artistiques diverses, ont reçu un appui financier totalisant 50 000 $. Les projets de recherche et création de Hannah Claus et Glenna Matoush en arts visuels, de Jean-Eudes Bourdages-Aster (Shauit) et Samuel Tremblay (Samian) en musique, de Lara Kramer en danse et de Joséphine Bacon en littérature ont été choisis parmi les douze dossiers qui ont été soumis au CALQ.

"Je félicite les premiers boursiers de ce tout nouveau programme mis sur pied en collaboration avec des représentants des communautés autochtones. L'intérêt manifesté par les artistes autochtones est important et la qualité des projets soutenus illustre leur grande vitalité artistique et littéraire" a déclaré M. Yvan Gauthier, président-directeur général du CALQ.  

Ainsi, Jean-Eudes Bourdages-Aster a reçu 8 000 $ pour la composition de sept pièces musicales mélangeant le reggae aux influences innues ; Joséphine Bacon a obtenu 7 000 $ pour l'écriture d'un recueil de poèmes ayant pour thème le nomadisme traditionnel et contemporain ; un montant de 10 000 $ a été attribué à Hannah Claus pour la réalisation d'une installation basée sur l'exploration des nuages comme métaphore selon les Haudenosaunee ; Samuel Tremblay a reçu 8 000 $ pour l'écriture de chansons destinées à son prochain album ; 7 000 $ ont été accordés à Glenna Matoush pour la réalisation d'une série de douze peintures sur toile et sur papier fait main et un montant de 10 000 $ a été alloué à Lara Kramer pour son projet de résidence de création en danse contemporaine au Banff Centre for the Arts.

RED SKY 5-DAY DANCE SEMINAR

This workshop is designed to introduce contemporary dancers and dance movement artists to the traditional dance forms of North American Indigenous peoples. Participants will explore the use of elements such as rhythm, shape, and concept by learning basic traditional dance forms. Through structured improvisation exercises, participants will develop their ability to incorporate these elements into their own distinctive dance vocabularies. At the end of the seminar, each artist will choreograph a short excerpt reflecting their own individual approach to traditional dance within the spectrum of contemporary dance.
