Description du programme

Le programme comporte quatre volets :

• Résidences d’écrivains autochtones en début de carrière

Ce volet est conçu pour permettre aux candidats retenus de mettre à jour et de perfectionner leurs compétences en rédaction et comprend des ateliers de formation, des périodes d’écriture individuelle en studio, des exposés de conférenciers, de la recherche sur Internet et dans des archives, ainsi qu’un volet culturel.
Ce volet fait l’objet d’une demande distincte. Les lignes directrices et le formulaire de demande pertinents peuvent être obtenus sur le site web du Conseil des arts du Canada ou en communiquant auprès du Service des lettres et de l’édition.

• Subventions au conte et à la création littéraire en langues autochtones

Ces subventions viennent en aide aux écrivains, aux conteurs et aux collectifs autochtones qui entreprennent des projets littéraires, oraux ou écrits, en langue autochtone ou bilingues (traduits en anglais ou en français). Le programme reconnaît deux catégories de candidats : établis et en début de carrière. Les projets admissibles incluent le conte, le roman et la nouvelle, la poésie, la littérature pour la jeunesse, les légendes, la mythologie et les essais littéraires. 

• Subventions à la création littéraire

Les subventions à la création littéraire viennent en aide aux écrivains et aux conteurs autochtones établis ou en début de carrière et appuient la création, en français ou en anglais, de projets de roman ou de nouvelle, de poésie ou d’essai littéraire.

• Subventions à l’édition

Les subventions à l’édition aident les éditeurs et les collectifs autochtones à publier des ouvrages littéraires autochtones. Le programme reconnaît deux catégories de candidats pour ce volet : éditeurs et collectifs établis et en début d’exercice. Les subventions accordées aux candidats établis ont pour but d’offrir un soutien au développement afin d’assurer la stabilisation et la croissance de l’industrie autochtone de l’édition.
Le programme soutient les projets de publication en français, en anglais et en langues autochtones. Une aide est accordée uniquement pour la création, la production, la distribution et la mise en marché du projet, dont le contenu doit être de nature littéraire.

Admissibilité du candidat

Les candidats doivent être citoyens canadiens ou résidents permanents du Canada, conformément aux définitions que donne Citoyenneté et Immigration Canada de ces expressions. Si vous êtes citoyen canadien, vous n'êtes pas tenu d'habiter au pays au moment où vous présentez votre demande.
Les écrivains et les conteurs doivent être des Autochtones. Les éditeurs et les collectifs doivent être dirigés par des Autochtones (autrement dit, la majorité des dirigeants de l’organisme ou du collectif doivent être autochtones).
Les Peuples autochtones comprennent les Premières Nations, les Métis et les Inuits.
Les projets réalisés en collaboration sont admissibles à ce programme. Les écrivains et les conteurs peuvent collaborer avec des artistes professionnels d’autres disciplines que l’écriture.

Montant des subventions

• Subventions au conte et à la création littéraire en langues autochtones

Les écrivains et les conteurs établis peuvent demander jusqu’à 10 000 $.
Les écrivains et les conteurs en début de carrière peuvent demander jusqu’à 5 000 $.
Les collectifs peuvent demander jusqu’à 20 000 $.

Program Description

The program has four components:

• Aboriginal Emerging Writers Residencies

This component is designed to refresh and refine the writing skills of successful applications, and will include instructional workshops, individual studio writing time, guest speakers, Internet and archival research, and a cultural component.
Separate program guidelines and application form for this component are available on the Canada Council’s website or from the Writing and Publishing Section.

• Storytelling and Creative Writing in Aboriginal Languages Grants

This component provides support to Aboriginal writers, storytellers and collectives. Two categories of individuals are eligible: established and emerging.
Grants support work on oral or written literary projects that are in an Aboriginal language or are bilingual (translated into English or French).
Projects in the following fields are eligible: storytelling, fiction, poetry, children’s literature, legends/mythology and literary non-fiction.

• Creative Writing Grants

Creative Writing Grants provide support to established and emerging Aboriginal writers and storytellers. Grants support the creation, in English or French, of new projects in the fields of fiction, poetry and creative non-fiction.

• Publishing Grants

This component provides support to Aboriginal publishers and collectives. Two categories of publishers and collectives are eligible: established and emerging. Grants to established applicants provide development assistance to help stabilize the Aboriginal publishing industry and support the growth of a strong industry.
The program supports publishing projects that involve Aboriginal literature in French, English or an Aboriginal language. Support is available for the creation, production, distribution and marketing of the literature, which must be literary in content.

Eligibility of Applicant

To apply to this program, you must be a Canadian citizen or have permanent resident status, as defined by Citizenship and Immigration Canada. You do not need to be living in Canada when you apply.
Writers and storytellers must be Aboriginal people. Publishers and collectives must be Aboriginal-controlled (in other words, Aboriginal people must make up a majority of the leadership of the organization or collective).
Aboriginal people include First Nations, Métis and Inuit people.
This program accepts collaborative projects, and writers or storytellers may work with professional artists from disciplines other than writing.

Established writers or storytellers: a maximum of $10,000
Emerging writers or storytellers: a maximum of $5,000

KANATA Journal Launch Celebration & Fundraiser for NFCM/ITYC - 11 April 2012

On Wednesday, April 11th from 6pm to 8pm KANATA is hosting its Volume 5 Journal Launch Celebration!


KANATA encourages you to come and show your support for our community and journal! Our journal launch serves to distribute and celebrate the publication but also to showcase other forms of knowledge transmission that could not be included in the pages of the academic journal. This includes storytelling, poetry readings, exhibiting artwork, musical performances and more. We thank and recognize contributors of the journal and we provide snacks and non-alcoholic refreshments. If you know anyone who would be interested in showcasing some form of art at our journal launch, please encourage them to contact KANATA at mcgillnativestudiesjournal@gmail.com.

This year’s journal launch is also unique in that it will also be a fundraiser for the Native Friendship Centre of Montreal and the Inter-tribal Youth Centre. The Inter-tribal Youth Centre just recently was forced to close due to a funding dispute. The Native Friendship Centre of Montreal is also threatened to close due to a lack of funding. Raffles and other fundraising activities will take place to support these integral centres for the urban indigenous community of Montreal.

Applicants should submit 5 - 10 pages (up to 2,500 words) of previously unpublished fiction.

As part of the 2012 program and the spring relocation of the trailer to the Quartier des Spectacles,
DARE-DARE is proud to announce its call for proposals.

CONTEXT: With its mandate of Dis/location: projet d’articulation urbaine, DARE-DARE provides a framework
for research and the presentation of contextual and public art practices.  Since 2004, the mandate has
provided an outlet for artistic interventions in the urban environment.  This exploration of the urban territory
is manifested through successive moorings of socially and politically aligned projects within the City of
Montreal. 

Mandate
DARE-DARE Centre de diffusion d’art multidisciplinaire de Montréal is a flexible and open artist-run center dedicated to research and
education.  The Center supports and develops emergent artistic practices through the exploration and diversification of modes of
production, the presentation and the diffusion of artistic works and interventions.

DARE-DARE offers the following three fields of intervention for you to work with:

FIELD 1            
Four to six week Interventions in Public Spaces (installations, performances, infiltration scenarios, etc.)
within the context of the Quartier des Spectacles. You are invited to draw inspiration from the keywords listed
below.

For your project DARE-DARE provides/secures:
- Exhibition fee 
- Author’s rights 
- Materials and production fee 
- Promotion and organization of your project 
- All necessary authorization and permits

FIELD 2            
A one to two month Residency/Laboratory Project of Documented Research culminating in a conference style
presentation.  The duration of this project will be determined in part by the artist's point or origin.

For your project DARE-DARE provides/secures:
- Studio space within a construction trailer
- Honorarium fee
- Materials and production fee 
- Per diem per day
- Accommodation provided through DARE-DARE (for artists living outside Montreal)
- Promotion and organization of your project

Urban Poetry/Writing Project.  Four short phrases (max. 15 words each) displayed on a non-electronic mobile
sign.

Indigenous Young Women: Speak Up and Take Part in kickaction’s Blogging Carnival! 

 

kickaction.ca is looking for guest bloggers for our annual Blogging Carnival beginning February 14th.
What is kickaction.ca?

It’s a place where you can post blogs on issues that are important to you, whether that is pop culture, the environment, social justice or anything else you want to talk about! It’s a place to speak your mind and connect with other young women from across the country.
kickaction is a project by Girls Action Foundation, a national charitable organization that leads and seeds girls’ programs across Canada.

 

What’s a blogging carnival?

A blogging carnival is when a bunch of bloggers converge on one site to write about a given topic, allowing readers to read a variety of takes on that issue.

To celebrate Girls Action Foundation’s National Day of Action on February 14th, kickaction.ca will be hosting a four-week long blogging carnival! The carnival will last throughout the month of February and March and includes International Women’s Day. Each week will have a new theme.

 

How can I get involved?

One of the themes is Indigenous young women and we’d like to recruit young women like yourself to post blogs and comment on issues like :
-What does indigenous young women’s leadership look like? 

-How do you build solidarity?
-How do you integrate elders and traditional teachers’ teachings in everyday life?
-How does being Indigenous change the way you think? 

-Or any issues you’d like to discuss! 

kickaction.ca is the place to do it, and the Blogging Carnival is a great opportunity to be read and exchange with other Indigenous young women.

kickaction.ca est à la recherche de blogueuses pour son carnaval de blogues annuel débutant le 14 février. 

Qu'est-ce que kickaction.ca?
C'est un endroit où tu peux publier tes billets sur les sujets qui te tiennent à coeur, que ce soit la culture populaire, l’environnement, la justice sociale ou tout autre sujet qui te chante ! C’est un endroit pour t’exprimer et pour rejoindre d’autres jeunes femmes de partout au pays. kickaction est une initiative de la Fondation filles d’action, un organisme de bienfaisance national qui crée et soutient des programmes pour filles partout au Canada.
C’est quoi au juste un carnaval de blogues?
Un carnaval de blogues, c’est un événement au cours duquel on regroupe en un seul endroit des blogues portant sur la même problématique, offrant aux lectrices une variété d’articles sur un thème donné. À l’occasion de la Journée nationale d’action de la Fondation filles d’action, le 14 février, kickaction.ca tiendra un carnaval de blogues. Pendant quatre semaines, entre la Journée nationale d’action et se terminant un peu après la Journée internationale de la femme, il y aura plusieurs blogues sur un thème, avec un nouveau thème chaque semaine.  

Comment puis-je m’impliquer?

Un des thèmes cette année se concentre sur les jeunes femmes autochtones, et nous voulons recruter des jeunes femmes comme toi pour parler de sujets tels que :
-À quoi ressemble le leadership des jeunes femmes autochtones? 

-Comment bâtir la solidarité? 

-Comment intégrer les enseignements des ainés et autres enseignant-es traditionnel-les dans le quotidien?
-Comment être autochtone change-t-il ta façon de voir le monde? 

-Et tout autre sujet qui t'intéresse!

Treize petits contes inspirés des Droits de l’enfant par Christine Sioui Wawanoloath en français et en anglais. Chaque conte est suivi d’une comptine en langue abénakise composée à partir du conte par Monique Nolett-Ille.

Thirteen short tales inspired by the Rights of the Child by Christine Sioui Wawanoloath in English and French. Each tale is followed by a nursery rhyme in abenaki language written, based on the tale, by Monique Nolett-Ille.

SSMU Equity Committee Call for papers - January 20, 2012

The SSMU Equity Committee is currently accepting submissions for its 2nd Annual Equity Conference happening on February 4, 2012. The conference is an opportunity for McGill students of all disciplines to share their research and knowledge of equity issues in a student-le...d environment.

Papers and art (visual, film, photography, performance, spoken word, etc.) are invited on any aspect of "Equity and Violence," such as direct, interpersonal, institutional, structural, and/or symbolic violence.

SAR Native Artist Fellowships deadline - January 15, 2012

School of Advanced Research Native Artist Fellowships

The Indian Arts Research Center (IARC) at the School for Advanced Research (SAR) offers four artist-in-residence fellowships annually to advance the work of mature and emerging Native artists. Each fellowship includes a monthly stipend, housing, studio space, a supplies allowance, and travel reimbursement to and from SAR. These fellowships provide time for artists to explore new avenues of creativity, grapple with new ideas to further advance their work, and to strengthen existing talents.

The fellowships support diverse creative disciplines and can include sculpture, performance, basketry, painting, printmaking, digital art, mixed media, photography, pottery, writing, and film and video. However each fellowship has specific applicant criteria as indicated below.

*The IARC fellowships are funded through the generosity of Ronald and Susan Dubin, Rollin and Mary Ella King, the Lannan Foundation, and Eric and Barbara Dobkin.

• Ron and Susan Dubin Native Artist Fellowship (Jun. 15–Aug. 15)
  The Dubin Fellowship is dedicated to supporting traditional Native artistry.
• Rollin and Mary Ella King Native Artist Fellowship (Sept. 1–Dec. 1)
  The King Fellowship is dedicated to preserving the Southwest’s extensive artistic heritage. Applicants to this fellowship must be from a Native community in the Southwestern United States (Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah) and work in the visual arts.
• SAR Indigenous Writer-in-Residence Fellowship (Jan. 3–Feb. 21)
  This residency is designed to support the literary arts. Writers in any format are encouraged to apply to this fellowship, which is generously supported by the Lannan Foundation.
• Eric and Barbara Dobkin Native Artist Fellowship for Women (Mar. 1–May 31)
  The Dobkin Fellowship encourages the creativity and growth of indigenous women artists working in any media.

Dans un espace de 3 500 pieds, nous allons avoir environ 44 œuvres  provenant de 22 artistes autochtones. Il y aura un salon littéraire où, nous allons présenter les livres écrits par des auteurs autochtones.  Aussi un salon de sculpture qui accueillera selon le calendrier des oeuvres de différents artistes. Et enfin, le salon cinématographie là où nous allons avoir plus de 500 courts-métrages disponibles au visionnement. Pendant 12 mois, il y aura une boutique sur place qui deviendra une plateforme de distribution pour un catalogue des 11 Nations, les lithographies, les cartes de souhaits, les livres produits par des auteurs AUTOCHTONES ainsi que des disques compacts de musique autochtones.

Six projets appuyés par le CALQ

Le Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec est heureux d'annoncer le résultat de la première inscription au Fonds Montréal pour les artistes et écrivains professionnels autochtones. Six projets, issus de pratiques artistiques diverses, ont reçu un appui financier totalisant 50 000 $. Les projets de recherche et création de Hannah Claus et Glenna Matoush en arts visuels, de Jean-Eudes Bourdages-Aster (Shauit) et Samuel Tremblay (Samian) en musique, de Lara Kramer en danse et de Joséphine Bacon en littérature ont été choisis parmi les douze dossiers qui ont été soumis au CALQ.

"Je félicite les premiers boursiers de ce tout nouveau programme mis sur pied en collaboration avec des représentants des communautés autochtones. L'intérêt manifesté par les artistes autochtones est important et la qualité des projets soutenus illustre leur grande vitalité artistique et littéraire" a déclaré M. Yvan Gauthier, président-directeur général du CALQ.  

Ainsi, Jean-Eudes Bourdages-Aster a reçu 8 000 $ pour la composition de sept pièces musicales mélangeant le reggae aux influences innues ; Joséphine Bacon a obtenu 7 000 $ pour l'écriture d'un recueil de poèmes ayant pour thème le nomadisme traditionnel et contemporain ; un montant de 10 000 $ a été attribué à Hannah Claus pour la réalisation d'une installation basée sur l'exploration des nuages comme métaphore selon les Haudenosaunee ; Samuel Tremblay a reçu 8 000 $ pour l'écriture de chansons destinées à son prochain album ; 7 000 $ ont été accordés à Glenna Matoush pour la réalisation d'une série de douze peintures sur toile et sur papier fait main et un montant de 10 000 $ a été alloué à Lara Kramer pour son projet de résidence de création en danse contemporaine au Banff Centre for the Arts.

Call-out for KANATA Indigenous Studies Conference Presentations and Performances - 01 Novembre

Hello friends of KANATA,

I am just emailing you to remind you that the deadline for proposed presentations for our upcoming KANATA Indigenous Studies Peer-to-Peer Conference is coming soon. If you are interested in presenting an experience, academic paper, etc. for 15-30 minutes during our November 24-25 conference, please contact us with a presentation abstract no more than 100 words by November 1st. Your abstract should include a title, your contact information and the university or institution you are affiliated with. That is in one week so be sure to remember! If you are thinking about presenting but unsure whether your material would be suitable for the conference, please feel free to email me. We are looking for students from all fields, faculties and education levels to present. It will be an exciting time to learn and share knowledge to gain a broader understanding of indigenous realities.  

We are also looking for performers interested in performing the evening of November 25th as a finale celebratory evening for the conference. If you are talented in music, spoken word, rap or another form of a performing art, please contact me. It will be a casual evening where all involved in the conference - participants, presenters and collaborators- can come together, celebrate the conference and connect with others.

November Play of the Month - NYC Playwrights

November Play of the Month 

10-Minute Play of the Month: NOVEMBER 2011

The theme for November is Native Americans in honor of theWampanoag people who taught the malnourished 17th-century English immigrants in Plymouth Massachusetts how to cultivate corn, farm squash and beans, catch fish, and collect seafood. The theme can involve any Native American group, not only the Wampanoag, but there must be a reference to Native Americans in your play.

Deadline: Sunday, November 6, 2011, 11:59 PM

1. Send only one ten-minute play per author to info@nycplaywrights.org

2. The script submission should be sent by email, with the play itself as a file attached to the email. File format should be in either Microsoft Word (.doc) or pdf.

3. The script can be no longer than 10 pages (not including title page, setting info page, etc. - pages will be counted only from where the actual on-stage directions and dialog begin.)

4. The script should be in standard playscript format. If you are not sure what that is, see this page on the NYCPlaywrights web site:

Plays that are not in standard format, or that have more than 10 pages (not counting title page, etc.) will be rejected immediately.

5. Make sure you have your name and your email address on the title page of the script.

6. Plays can be from anybody, anywhere in the world, but must be primarily in English (a few non-English phrases are acceptable, but the phrases must include English translations in production notes or stage directions.)

7. There is no fee for submission - and no payment given for the plays selected. Do not send a submission if you are expecting monetary compensation.

8. The NYCPlaywrights selection decision is final and NYCPlaywrights reserves the right to select no plays from those submitted.

9. The play must have been written by the person making the submission.

10. The play can have had a previous production but cannot have been published.

11. All rights will remain with the playwright.

12. The selected play will be videotaped as a reading during an NYCPlaywrights meeting and posted shortly after, during the month of November.

13. The video recording of the play reading will be posted to the NYCPlaywrights YouTube account and from there embedded into the NYCPlaywrights blog. The embedded section may be an excerpt of the play reading rather than the entire reading. The playwright will be asked to review the video recording and approve it before it is made
public.

14. The play must reflect the month's theme in some meaningful way.
